Mr Gary Colleary, MB BCh BAO, PhD, FRCS (Tr & Orth) is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at The Royal Victoria Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital. He specialises in all aspects of Foot and Ankle Surgery and he also continues to undertake Trauma work as member of the on-call Trauma Team at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Gary’s developed his interest in Foot and Ankle surgery early on in his surgical training and has completed a specialist fellowship in Foot and Ankle surgery in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge under the guidance of Mr. Fred Robinson.

Gary completed his Medical Degree at The Queens University Belfast graduating in 1996, and completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the Northern Ireland Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Scheme. During this time Gary completed a PhD involving 3 years full time research into the effects of the newer biologic Rheumatoid Arthritis treatments on bone density and fracture healing. In 2009 Gary moved to Cambridge to undertake his Fellowship training. Following this Fellowship period Gary was offered a Consultants Foot and Ankle Surgeon position at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the major teaching hospital in East Anglia. During this time he advanced his training in sports injuries having treated players from Norwich City soccer team.

Gary returned to Northern Ireland in 2012 where he has continued to advance his practice over the intervening period. As well as having an ongoing interest in general trauma focusing on complex foot and ankle injuries, his elective practice is focused on treatment of all conditions of the foot and ankle, including sports injuries, arthritis of the foot and ankle, bunions and other toe deformities and Achilles tendon or plantar fascial heel pain. He performs both open and arthroscopic (Keyhole) procedures as appropriate.

He also has a keen interest Diabetic Foot conditions and is currently working as part of a team to develop a Northern Ireland Multi Disciplinary Service to improve the treatment of patients with foot conditions arising from diabetes including ulcers and infections or bony collapse of the foot caused by Charcot arthropathy. Gary firmly believes that the proper early intervention and care of these conditions can prevent longer term major consequences for diabetic patients.

He regularly teaches undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and lectures to General Practictioners, Podiatrists and Physiotherapists. Gary is married with two teenage children, he enjoys golf, soccer and walking Molly the dog.
