In November, over 400 GPs, Consultants, Physiotherapists, and S&C professionals gathered in Croke Park for the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Conference hosted by UPMC Ireland Orthopaedic Care.
UPMC Ireland Managing Director Eamonn Fitzgerald and MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA, UPMC Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, who travelled from Pittsburgh to be with us, welcomed the delegates.
Our guest of honour was Olympic, World, and European Champion Rhys McClenaghan, who inspired everyone present with his story of winning Olympic Gold in Paris earlier this year.
The morning session started with a tour de force on the shoulder from Mr Hannan Mullett, Ms Ruth Delaney, Edel Fanning, PhD, and Albert Lin, Chief of Shoulder Surgery with UPMC.
We then proceeded to a session on the Lower Limb. MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA, focused on foot and ankle injury in elite athletes, followed by Mr Johnny McKenna.
Prof. Cathal Moran presented on the Management of ACL and related knee ligament injury, Mr Mark Jackson on the implications of tearing an ACL and Thilina Vitharana on visual reliance following an ACL.
Dr Neil Welch, Head of Research, presented on Building Your Breaks – Training Deceleration during ACL Return to Play, while Mr Patrick Carton spoke to delegates on Hip preservation in athletes and active patients – a 20-year experience.
Alicia Trbovich travelled to Croke Park from the UPMC Concussion Programme in Pittsburgh and presented on Evidence-Based Evaluation and Targeted Treatment for sport- related concussion.
The event was rounded out with an invigorating discussion from UPMC Sport Medicine’s Dr Ciaran Cosgrave and Dr Ronan Kearney with Newstalk and Off The Ball’s Ger Gilroy.
They spoke about operating in elite sporting environments and the challenges posed through experience as Team Doctors with Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), Team Ireland Olympics, The British & Irish Lions, Leinster Rugby, Louth GAA and Liverpool Football Club.
We are looking forward to our 2025 event already!
